Toddler from New Square expected to recover after being hit by van
This marks the sixth time a child has been hit by a vehicle this year within the town.
Ramapo police say a 2-year-old boy suffered a head injury after being hit by a minivan near Stern Street and Clinton Lane in New Square around 7 p.m. Tuesday night. He’s expected to make a full recovery.
The 38-year-old driver from New Square stayed on the scene and cooperated with the police.
While the details of what happened are still being investigated, the police believe the boy went into the street between two parked cars.
“I offer my sincere sympathies for the family. Hopefully for a speedy recovery," said State Sen. Bill Weber in a virtual interview Wednesday with News 12.
This marks the sixth time a child has been hit by a vehicle this year within the town. While Tuesday night's incident did not involve a school bus, other incidents have.
In January, an 8-year-old boy was struck and killed by a school bus near the same intersection as Tuesday’s crash.
Ramapo police tell me they're working on a safety initiative to address that.
"The safety of all the residents in the town is a priority for us,” said Lieutenant Blaine Howell, “So if there's something we can do to make it safer for the community, obviously we're going to do it."
He says they will soon roll out a bus safety program to public and private schools within the town. Other efforts are already underway for pedestrian safety.
Ramapo's crash investigation team is probing the cause of the crash.
