? Community activists surveyed illegal immigrants in Westchester to learn about their concerns.
Dr. Maria Munoz Kantha prepared the survey, which about 128 immigrants answered, mostly in Mamaroneck. The questions covered issues like working conditions and available services. The survey revealed that most immigrants were concerned with basic issues, like getting paid on time, having bathrooms and the desire to learn English. Other concerns included having the opportunity to raise their children and participate in the American dream. The issue of day laborer sites was not on the survey, but advocates say they are needed.
Critics argue that illegal immigrants, especially day laborers, are competing with legal immigrants and Americans for jobs. The village of Mamaroneck closed a day laborer site in February, prompting a lawsuit from several undocumented workers. They claim the village is impeding their right to assemble and free speech. The village and plaintiffs are in negotiations to try and settle the lawsuit.
