News 12 is told authorities seized about $3,500 worth of illegal fireworks.
An anonymous tip was called into the city’s tip line about a specific location that held the large amount of fireworks.
On June 22, officials initiated an investigation that included the Yonkers Police Department, the fire department and city building inspectors.
The fireworks were safely seized. The occupant of the apartment, a 31-year-old Yonkers resident, was detained.
The second seizure occurred yesterday at 8:30 p.m. News 12 is told a gang unit detective was patrolling the Riverview Place area upon conducting a traffic stop.
According to a press release, “An investigation was commenced which revealed that the occupant of the vehicle was in possession of an assortment of illegal fireworks believed to cost several hundred dollars.”
The fireworks were taken, and the driver was issued a summons for possession.
“Possession, storage, sale and transport of fireworks is illegal in the City of Yonkers,” says Commissioner John Mueller. “While NYS did pass a law for permissible uses of some fireworks, Westchester County and Yonkers, did not participate, and have of this law.”
Mayor Mike Spano commends Yonkers police, fire and buildings departments for the seizures.
“Let these recent seizures of fireworks be a warning to others -- Yonkers will not tolerate the illegal use of fireworks,” says Spano. “We will continue to maintain the safety and well-being of our city.”
The Yonkers Police Department encourages the public to report illegal firework activity by calling 914-377-7900 or sending an anonymous tip via text message to 847411.
