The man accused in the Hanukkah attack in Monsey is facing new federal hate crime charges.

Police say Grafton Thomas injured five people with a machete during a Hanukkah celebration at a rabbi's house.

Officials say Grafton Thomas now faces a total of 10 federal hate crime charges.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Thomas targeted the group because of their religion.

Prosecutors say they found handwritten journal entries in Grafton's home with anti-Semitic sentiments, as well as searches on his phone for local temples.

Thomas has pleaded not guilty to state crimes of attempted murder and his attorney says Thomas has a long history of mental illness.

The 37-year-old is being held without bail.
