State police are dealing with a trooper shortage as more officers retire than get hired.

Police have had 267 retirements this year, not a good combination with troopers expected to take up expanded duties.

New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association President Thomas Mungeer says despite a fair contract and competitive salary, dangerous work and public perception of law enforcement leaves many reluctant to want to join.

Despite a class of 250 troopers coming in January, it could take the new recruits a year to be ready to serve.

Mungeer says it costs roughly $20 million to fund a class, which encompasses salary and equipment.

Mungeer plans to rally the state Legislature to earmark funds to recruit new troopers.
