New York State Police say one person is dead after a small plane crash Thursday night on I-684 in Harrison near the New York-Connecticut border, near Greenwich.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says a second person is in serious condition.

Sources say the victim is 32-year-old Yakov Friedman, of Monsey.

The plane took off from Linden, New Jersey, according to Flight Aware.

The Federal Aviation Administration says a single-engine Tecnam P-2008 crashed near Westchester County Airport in White Plains around 6:35 p.m.

The FAA says two people were on board the plane when it crashed.

The National Transportation Safety Board says its preliminary investigation says the plane reported engine failure and tried to land at Westchester County Airport when it crashed.

The NTSB says its investigators are expected to arrive at the scene on Friday.

The NTSB urges anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the agency at witness@ntsb.gov.

Hochul said in a statement she was briefed on the incident and confirmed the crash caused a gas spill, which the Department of Environmental Conservation was cleaning up as of Thursday night.

New York State Police says the northbound lanes at Exit 2 and the southbound lanes at Exit 3 are closed.

As of Thursday night, motorists were being encouraged to take local detours as road closures are "expected to be significant."
