If you want your voice heard in just a few weeks on Election Day, you need to vote - but you need to be registered first.
League of Women Voters of Northern Westchester will be holding National Voter Registration Day events at area libraries such as the Mount Kisco, Somers, Lewisboro and Katonah. today until 2 p.m.
National Voter Registration Day was established in September 2012 and designed to remind Americans about the importance of voting.
According to election officials, millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote each year because they miss a registration deadline, don't update their registration, or aren't sure how to register. "Registering to vote in New York State requires filling in a large form, and people might be a little daunted by it or not know where to get the forms. We have the forms and we have the help," says Katherine Dering, of the League of Women Voters.
So there will be volunteers all over the country today holding events reminding people to register to vote. Registration rules can differ from state to state. In New York you can register to vote on-line, mail in a registration form, or do it in person.
The deadline to register in New York is Oct. 9. If you mail in a form, it's got to be postmarked by Oct. 9. New York does not offer voter registration on election day, which this year is Tuesday, Nov. 3. The early voting period here in New York runs from Saturday, October 24 to Sunday, November 1. But dates and hours may vary based on where you live.
