Yonkers has approved a zoning ordinance that clears the way for the expansion of Empire City Casino.
Mayor Mike Spano says the amendment officially designates the property as a casino district. MGM Resorts, which owns Empire City, recently submitted an application to New York State for one of three full-gaming licenses.
Bids on eight proposals, including Empire City, are due to the state's Gaming Commission today.
The state is expected to select the winning proposals by the end of the year.
