Yonkers has seen a significant decline in shootings so far this year compared to 2023. That's according to new data released Tuesday by Gov. Kathy Hochul's office.
The statistics have been reported by police departments participating in New York state’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative.
Multiple departments in the Hudson Valley are involved in the initiative. That includes Yonkers, Mount Vernon and Poughkeepsie.
In Yonkers, from January 2023 to July 2023, there were 14 shooting incidents and 15 shooting victims. Throughout the same time frame in 2024, there have been six shooting incidents and six shooting victims.
"We're not immune from crime but we're deploying a lot of different measures here in Yonkers that aren't being deployed in other places," says Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza.
Sapienza tells News 12, he's not surprised by the decrease. He says his department works hard to stay on top of crime, they do that through community policing and also technology.
