There is a new war memorial in Rockland County.
The Gulf War - War on Terror monument was unveiled over the weekend in Haverstraw Bay County Park. A group of veterans who served in those wars designed it.
The names of eight service members from Rockland who made the ultimate sacrifice are on the monument. "They are hometown heroes, and they will not be forgotten because of the people of Rockland County," says keynote speaker Gen. Dennis J. Hejlik.
A gold star in the center of the wall represents all of the families who lost loved ones. "This is a fitting tribute to those who served in the wars and made the ultimate sacrifice for the country. It's also the first monument of its kind in the entire state of New York and across the country. We should be proud," adds Rockland County Executive Ed Day.
