Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-16) lashed out in a statement after Westchester County Executive George Latimer officially filed paperwork to challenge him in the June primary for the 16th Congressional District.
It said in part, "Congressman Bowman's focus remains first and foremost on delivering for the people of his district and standing up to powerful special interests in Congress. It's not a surprise that a Super PAC that routinely targets Black members of Congress with primary challenges and is funded by the same Republican mega-donors who give millions to election-denying Republicans including Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, and Ted Cruz have recruited a candidate for this race."
The statement continues, affirming that the two-time congressman will "continue to fight and deliver what the people of New York's 16th District are demanding like affordable housing, child care, climate action, jobs, education, healthcare, and defeating antisemitism, Islamophobia, and racism."
Latimer's filing allows him to set up a committee to receive funds and sets up his candidacy.
News 12's Tara Rosenblum reports that Latimer is preparing a video announcement over the next 24 hours and will formally launch his campaign by Wednesday. Three sources told Rosenblum in early November that Latimer had planned to run.
Dobbs Ferry investment banker Martin Dolan also plans to run.
