Students at Purchase College are still afraid to drink the water on campus after tests found high levels of lead.
Amanda Green, a senior at Purchase, says she refuses to drink the water coming out of the tap in her dorm room. She says she is really worried after many of her neighbors at the Alumni Village dorms had their water test positive for lead in recent months.
College officials insist the vast majority of the water is safe. Officials says 1,900 samples have been gathered from across the campus and so far only 10 percent came back showing high levels of lead.
College officials believe the high lead levels are contained to a limited area.
"I'm pretty confident in saying it's not a water source problem, otherwise we'd have a large scale across the campus," says Mike Kopa, facilities director at Purchase College. "It's very localized in certain areas so the consultants say it's a localized problem likely coming from fixtures, faucets and localized plumbing."
College officials say students whose water supply was affected have been notified. They say the students were given filters and bottled water. However, some students feel they have not been given peace of mind.
