The New York Archdiocese is withdrawing plans to allow priests with sex abuse pasts to go on retreat in Larchmont because of community concerns. The Trinity Retreat held an invitation-only town meeting Sunday to address residents? complaints that pedophiles should not be living in a residential area. Some say they are feeling relieved by the change of plans.A total of seven priests with sex abuse histories were to have relocated to the Trinity Retreat as part of the New Shepard?s Program. The program monitors priests who were not defrocked, but who are suspected of committing sexual abuse.Cathy Hickes, a neighbor and retreat volunteer, says the residents? concerns were understandable, but adds she thinks the community would have remained safe for children. The archdiocese says it plans to move the New Shepard?s Program to an undisclosed location.
