Vandals over the weekend slashed the swimming pool of a Jewish camp for children in Rockland County.
Organizers of Camp Shalom, located in Chestnut Ridge, say the latest act of vandalism is just one example of the harassment they've dealt with.
Police tell News 12 that the 26-by-40-foot pool was slashed several times. Police call it criminal mischief, but the camp's attorney believes it may be more serious than that.
"I would like to believe it's somebody who decided to do their vandalism here, but it's an Orthodox Jewish camp. When hate is a motive for a crime, that's much worse than normal vandalism," says attorney Ryan Karben.
Organizers say this is the first year that Camp Shalom rented the space, which is located on the grounds of the Chestnut Ridge Middle School. The camp rented the space from the East Ramapo School District for $125,000.
Camp officials plan to increase security for the rest of the summer and say they have been promised that police will keep extra cruisers in the area.
