State police are searching for the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run in Greenburgh.Officials say the incident happened Monday at about 5:30 p.m. on the Sprain Brook Parkway near Jackson Avenue. According to officials, 60-year-old Ohanio Lawrence, who apparently suffered from mental problems, was walking in the center lane of the parkway when he was hit. Police say several people stopped to help Lawrence, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. They say before the incident, several people made calls notifying authorities that there was a man walking along the northbound lanes of the parkway. According to authorities, Lawrence was hit by someone driving a white SUV. Since it was dark at the time of the incident, police say it is possible the driver was not aware that he or she hit someone. Police say there was no sign of a disabled car.
Police say Lawrence, who is originally from New Rochelle but now lives in the Bronx, was known to take walks along the Bronx River Parkway. Authorities say they don't yet know how he ended up on the Sprain Brook Parkway.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call state police at 914-769-2600.
