Police say one man is dead and another is in custody after a police chase closed the Saw Mill River Parkway along the Bronx-Westchester County border Tuesday.

Police say that an NYPD patrol car tried to pull over a car for unspecified violations at 242nd Street and Broadway in the Bronx. The suspects fled the officers in a silver Nissan and got on the northbound Saw Mill Parkway. 

Police say the suspects made a U-turn and headed the wrong way along the parkway before crashing into a black Volkswagen driven by a civilian bystander near the Cross County Parkway.

One of the suspects fled on foot into the woods of Tibbetts Brook Park. Police fired a single shot, which fatally struck him there. They later identified him as Miguel Espinal, a 36-year-old Florida man who was on parole for burglary. He may also have been wanted on other charges in his home state.

The surviving suspect, identified as 25-year-old Yonkers resident Akeem Smith, and the driver of the black Volkswagen were taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx with injuries that were not life-threatening. 

Smith's lawyer says he is on probation for a federal drug charge.

The two NYPD officers involved in the shooting were taken to Montefiore Medical Center for evaluation.

The parkway was closed between McLean Avenue and the Cross County Parkway for hours, causing major backups on most roadways in the area. A single southbound lane reopened just in time for the evening rush, although traffic continued to plague the area.
