A Peekskill girl is getting a big lesson on how to stand up for others.

Irene Lindberg says she was angry when she saw families being separated on TV by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

It's a tough lesson to learn at a young age, but Courtney Williams took the opportunity to teach her daughter a valuable lesson -- if you want to make a change, you have to get involved.

"I said, 'You know, when the chance arises, we will do what we can,'" Williams said. "Even though we're here in New York and not Mississippi, I think it's important that folks come out and stand up and say 'This isn't right.'"

They joined local immigrant activist Luis Yumbla on the steps of the United States Court House in White Plains to call on local leaders to step in and help.

"We're asking that they need to call to our Congress representatives in Washington to pass the laws in order to protect our community," Yumbla said.
