A 5-year-old girl from Peekskill is in critical, but stable condition after police say she was struck by a young driver Monday evening.

The accident happened outside Peekskill High School around 5:30 when the girl, who police say was left unattended by her parents, ran out from behind a parked car. The driver, 23-year-old Steven Roberts, was making a right turn at the time and hit her.

Authorities say Roberts immediately called his mother, who says her son was hysterical. Emergency crews rushed to the scene. The girl, whose name has not been released, was conscious when police arrived. She was airlifted to the Westchester Medical Center.

Roberts? vehicle was impounded, and the accident is under investigation. He says had he been driving fast, the outcome could have been much worse. There has been no word on where the girl?s parents were at the time of the accident.
