Over 100 people in Peekskill are homeless after a devastating fire in their apartment building.

Flames ignited around 6:30 p.m. Monday at the 21-unit complex on Fremont Avenue, near Peekskill High School. "I was laying with my kids. It was two explosions I heard. Then I see the fire going right away, quick. So I grabbed my kids and ran outside," says neighbor Nelson Fernandez.

Fire officials say at least 60 firefighters worked to get the blaze under control. Six firefighters were taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion.

Officials tell News 12 that the fire may have started outside of the building, but that is still under investigation.

The Red Cross has set up a shelter at Peekskill Middle School for many of the residents.
