A Greenburgh police officer has been suspended without pay after making an allegedly racist online post at the height of unrest in Baltimore last week.
Police officials say veteran Officer Brad DiCairano, 54, posted two juxtaposed pictures, one of black protesters on top of a minivan during last year's unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, and another of a photo of baboons swarming a car driven by a white woman. The post was accompanied by the caption, "what can I say!"
The off-color joke drew immediate backlash from fellow officers in Greenburgh. DiCairano was subsequently suspended without pay and relieved of duty by Greenburgh Police Chief Chris McNerney.
McNerney says that the post was hurtful and the timing and nature of it are troubling. He says DiCairano appeared to regret his actions.
Lena Anderson, president of the NAACP White Plains Greenburgh Branch, says that while she supports freedom of speech, individuals must be held accountable for their offensive actions and face the consequences.
Chief McNerney will meet with the Greenburgh Town Board on Tuesday to discuss whether further disciplinary actions will be taken.
DiCairano is a 28-year veteran of the force with an unblemished record. His Facebook account has since been deactivated.
