Nike is joining a number of companies making a new holiday.

Juneteenth is now an official paid company holiday for the athletic brand.

Nike's CEO just made the announcement to employees this week.

Juneteenth honors the day in 1865 when Union soldiers announced the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to enslaved African Americans.

The move is just one part of Nike's plans to honor demonstrations calling for racial justice.
