Nyack schools drop Indians as mascot
Nyack schools will no longer use the Indians as its mascot.
The school board voted unanimously Tuesday in favor of retiring the decades-old name.
They says they wanted to take a stand against systemic racism. "The use of Native American symbols is a function of that. I think what it's going to do is help heighten the awareness that we all need to have so that there can be an equal footing for everybody in our community," says Nyack School Board President Michael Mark.
There is no word on what the new mascot will be. The school board president says the entire community will be involved in the decision making process.
