From natural disasters to chemical spills, soldiers train to become members of the New York Guard at Camp Smith in Cortlandt Manor.
News 12's Kristen Pope got a taste of what goes into the training at the camp amid Friday's hot temperatures.
The first step was to put on a suit reminiscent of aluminum foil and comprising four pairs of gloves, a hood, a helmet, shoes and another pair of boots.
Pope was then tasked with decontaminating a guard who had just finished a simulated chemical rescue.
