The sounds of slot machines won?t be heard just yet as the opening of a multi-million dollar casino at the Yonkers Raceway was delayed.
A plan for a $240 million dollar video lottery casino was approved five years ago and is expected to bring hundreds of millions of dollars of revenue into the city of Yonkers. Timothy Rooney Jr., the vice president and general counsel of the raceway, says some delays are to be expected. Rooney says the video lottery machines have to be installed and 800 employees need to be trained in skills to service the multitude of customers expected. A total of 5,500 video lottery machines are planned for the casino.
Yonkers schools are expected to reap at least $20 million in revenue from the lottery terminals. Yonkers Raceway will be the largest gambling venue between Atlantic City and the Indian casinos in Connecticut. Owners are hoping for a so-called "soft opening" for the casino in early October, with the grand opening sometime in December.
