Mount Vernon firefighter Rodney Mack Jr. was mourned at his funeral Thursday at the Allen Memorial Church of God.
Mack, 27, died last week of brain cancer. He was diagnosed in January, just three days after he graduated from the fire academy.
Mack was an MVP quarterback at Mount Vernon High School and had acted in three films, but family members say his real dream was to become a firefighter.
"He was happy the day he graduated," says his uncle, Shawn Mack. "He said he couldn't wait to have his uniform and save lives and help save people. That was his mission."
Mack is survived by a 4-year-old child.
