Officers from across the country joined family, friends and fellow policemen in Westchester to remember the life of the detective killed in a head-on collision last weekend.
Funeral services for Yonkers Detective Frank Fernandez were held Friday at Sacred Heart Church.
Over the past two nights, more than 1,000 mourners attended wake services the 45-year-old detective, who was a 15-year veteran of the Yonkers police force.
It was just before 3 a.m. last Sunday when Fernandez slammed his SUV into a city fire truck. The truck was one of two responding to a call at Palmer and Sunnybrook roads. Fernandez, who police say had worked a 4 p.m. to midnight shift, died at the scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Friends and family describe the married father of two young boys as a loving, giving man, who was known for his smile.
Fernandez was laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings.
