11h ago Mount Vernon has turned fire hydrants into urban splash pads to keep people cool amid the extreme heat.
The fire department opened 10 fire hydrants across the city from Madison to Grove Street Playground.
Deputy Fire Chief Juan Peralta says it is a common inner-city pastime on days when temperatures rise above 85 degrees.
"The kids request it even before we get a chance to go out, they will knock and request it,” he said.
Fire officials plan to open them back up on Friday.
