Most residents of the Huguenot House apartment building on Locust Avenue returned home the night after a fire triggered an evacuation on Sunday.
The blaze drove about 100 tenants out as thick smoke filled the structure.
Many elderly residents needed help escaping.
Chief Andrew Sandor of the New Rochelle Fire Department said that the building was “charged with smoke and that's why everyone had to evacuate.”
“There were carbon monoxide readings throughout the building so that's the normal procedure that we vent the building and check the levels," he said.
Fire crews cleared the floors, allowing most to return.
The Red Cross is assisting those from the affected unit.
One resident and a firefighter sustained minor injuries.
The cause is still unknown.
