Dozens of tenants were forced to evacuate when fire and heavy smoke broke out Sunday afternoon at a New Rochelle apartment building.

Officials say it happened at the Hugenot House apartment building on Locust Avenue just before 4 p.m.

Although the building houses families and individuals of all ages, elderly residents, some with walkers and scooters, were among those who needed help to escape through the heavy, black smoke.

Many were wrapped in bed sheets to stay warm.

The cause of the two-alarm fire was not immediately known as of Sunday night.

Officials say there were no serious injuries, except for a resident who twisted their ankle while they were getting out of the building.

New Rochelle Fire Department Chief Andrew Sandor said about 100 tenants had to be evacuated but some people sheltered in place.

Crews were still in the process of checking floors as of Sunday night to ensure that it would be safe for residents to return.
