New York's two senators are joining with a Hudson Valley congressman to echo calls on the creation of a crash gate after the deadly Orange County bus crash on I-84.
Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, along with Rep. Pat Ryan, are calling on the Federal Highway Administration to help create access to I-84 just for emergency vehicles.
First responders in the area have asked for what's known as a crash gate for a decade.
The crash last month that killed two Long Island educators and hurt dozens of students renewed those calls.
First responders say they can only currently get to that area of the highway in a roundabout way, making response times longer.
They argue a crash gate would allow them to access the interstate 5 to 10 minutes faster and possibly save lives.
