A massive water main break in Yonkers caused problems Monday for commuters and homeowners.
Department of Public Works officials say the break occurred at around 4:30 a.m. on King Street near Nepperhan and Executive boulevards. It flooded numerous streets in the area.
Homeowners on Pomona Avenue also woke up to flooded basements.
Yonkers DPW commissioner Tom Meier says the freezing and thawing of the pipes this winter was just too much for the old pipes to take.
Meier says that crews were working into the night on Monday to fix the problem.
He says in addition to the broken water main, a water valve had to be replaced and two other water mains were found to be leaking. The repairs may take several days to complete.
Officials say there are no health hazards and the city is assisting homeowners.
They say everyone in the area has water, gas and electricity.
