A man rescued his faithful companion this morning from some icy waters in Mount Kisco.

Fire officials say the man was out walking his dog when the dog's paw slipped on some ice along Wallace Drive.

The man walked into the water to save his dog, but officials say that was a mistake. "Dial 911. Leave it up to the professionals and they will do whatever to get everybody out of the water," says Mount Kisco Fire Chief John Boddie.

Boddie is warning people that while temperatures are very cold, most bodies of water do not have ice that is thick enough to walk or skate on. He says if you do fall in, it's important to not panic, and to try to roll your way onto the ice. Once on the ice, stay lying down and don't stand up until you get to safety.

Boddie says it can take just minutes for hypothermia to set in.
