Man accused in 2008 murder released on bail ahead of third trial

A man whose murder convictions were overturned has been released from jail as he awaits a third trial in Putnam County.
Anthony Grigoroff, 35, was released Monday evening after spending 17 years in custody.
A judge granted a second bail request last week after previously denying release.
Grigoroff is accused in the December 2008 killing of John Marcinak, who owned Garrison Garage on Route 9.
Prosecutors say Grigoroff originally told investigators he was in a car nearby while another man fatally shot Marcinak during an attempted robbery.
Defense attorneys argue that confession was false and say Grigoroff has since denied being near the scene.
A state appellate court overturned his previous convictions from 2010 and 2017, citing judicial errors. In the more recent decision, the panel said the judge should have allowed more testimony about false confessions.
Grigoroff's attorney maintains that his client's 2009 confession was false and that it was pulled out of him by Putnam County detectives using deceptive tactics during a 12-hour interrogation.
Grigoroff still faces a murder charge. He is scheduled to go on trial again in October.
Under the conditions of his release, he must stay at a relative’s home and can only leave for court or medical appointments.
Officials say he is also required to wear an ankle monitor.
