Students in Mamaroneck claim the school district has been a hotbed of racism for years - and now they're demanding changes.
Dozens took a stand in front of Mamaroneck High School, vowing to camp out on school property until their demands are met.
They accused the Mamaroneck School District of covering up acts of racism from both students and staff, as well as retaliating against those who spoke out.
The rampant use of the "N-word" against Black students is just one of the claims of daily racial harassment.
The latest allegations involve a federal lawsuit against the district, in which two students claim classmates constantly called them the N-word, mimicked the act of whipping slaves using towels and teased them because of the color of their skin. The racism allegedly got so bad and lasted so long that the pair are now being home-schooled.
"The district needs to wrestle with the fact that there is a deep-seated, significant problem and it needs a real meaningful response," says Andrew Wilson, civil right lawyer.
In a statement, the Mamaroneck School District said, "We encourage students to use their voices to express themselves and respect their right to protest peacefully. We are committed to engaging students in open, honest, and difficult conversations to address issues of racism and bias."
Protesters are also asking for bias training for staff, racially sensitive curriculum for students, a reallocation of the school's budget for students in need and the resignation of both the superintendent of schools and Board of Education president.
