State
lawmakers are speaking out about New York's dangerously high rate of C-section
deliveries.
Hudson
Valley Assemblymember Amy Paulin is among a number of state lawmakers calling
for help to lower the number of expecting moms who are pressured into cesarian
section births.
The state's
C-section rate is at 32% - the 12th highest in the U.S. - and more than
double the CDC's recommendation.
Low income
and women of color are also disproportionately affected by those stats.
Lawmakers
hope the passage of four new bills will help better protect and educate mothers. "Why is
it the case that in some hospitals there is a 50%
C-section rate? Why in some hospital is there a 10% C-section rate? What is happening?
It’s not about the women," says Paulin.
The package
will be introduced in the state legislature during the upcoming session.
