State lawmakers in Westchester listened to testimony Tuesday to examine rent regulation in New York and to look at proposals to expand tenant protections.

Senators on the Housing, Construction and Community Development Committee organized the public hearing at Greenburgh Town Hall.

Dozens of people for and against proposed changes to rent stabilization were in attendance.

Many tenants and tenant advocacy groups support making rent-regulated apartments more affordable and having protections against predatory landlords. Opponents including landlords say reform threatens to put small landlords in financial crisis and it jeopardizes construction of affordable housing.

New York updates its rent laws every few years. This is the fifth and final public hearing on this topic. The laws are set to expire June 15.
