The first human case of West Nile virus has been found in the Hudson Valley as a Larchmont woman has been hospitalized with the illness.

The case is the first in Westchester and the second in New York.

Westchester County health officials are advising residents to take precautions against the virus. Insect repellent is recommended, along with installing screens in doors and windows. Residents are also advised to throw away any standing water on their property, as that's where mosquitoes can breed.

The virus causes flu-like symptoms, but could potentially be much worse. Doctors say 70 to 80 percent of people who contract West Nile virus will be fine.

The 71-year-old woman has been hospitalized and is being treated with medication.
