A landmark tree that has seen a lot of history is about to become history. Referred to as the "hanging tree" or the "old oak," the 72-foot tall tree stands next to Peekskill High School. The tree is thought to be close to 400 years old and marks the site where a British spy was hanged in 1777 during the American Revolution. Lightning struck the tree June 1, causing significant damage, and officials say the tree has to come down. Residents say they are upset about losing the tree. Lorman Augustowski was trying to raise money to save the tree. Once the tree comes down, Augustowski says a monument will be put in its place. The bronze tablet, now embedded in the tree, will become part of the monument.A smaller, white oak tree will be planted to mark the historic location.
