State officials reluctantly cut down what was considered to be the oldest living Eastern cottonwood in the United States.
For the past 316 years, the Balmville tree has been rooted at what's become the intersection of Balmville Road and Commonwealth Avenue in Newburgh.
Authorities say the historic tree, which grew to more than 8 eight feet in diameter, was completely hollow inside.
Despite efforts to hold it up, they say it became a danger to everyone around it.
