A mistaken luring attempt has parents and school officials breathing a sigh of relief in Hastings-on-Hudson today.
Police say an 11-year-old Farragut Middle School student was walking alone when he was approached by a man and a woman in a gray sedan offering him a ride. He didn't know the couple so he walked home.
The school district immediately sent out an email blast to notify parents of the incident. When news spread across town, the couple came forward telling police they knew the boy, but the middle school student simply didn't recognize them.
Police say the boy still did the right thing by going home and telling his parents. "Absolutely did the right thing. Didn't even answer them immediately, turned around and began to walk back to his house. In those situations, that's exactly what we want you to do," says Hastings Police Chief Anthony Visalli.
Police and school officials are using the incident as a teaching opportunity to help raise awareness about how handle being approached by strangers. The school sent out a second email blast with links on how to speak to kids.
