New Rochelle residents believe concerns about ICE played role in Latin American celebration cancellation

City officials wouldn't confirm whether those fears played a role in the decision, but the city manager issued a statement saying the choice was "made to ensure our public events remain safe, welcoming, and successful for all."

A festival in New Rochelle that celebrates Latin American culture has been canceled this year and some believe fears over ICE activity are to blame.

For years, the Taste of Union Avenue has celebrated Latin American flavor and festivity in New Rochelle.

"[We] have mariachi, we have a lot of food, so the Spanish community [gets to come] together and have a good time," said New Rochelle resident Maria.

However, this year, the city's manager announced that Union Avenue will not be a part of New Rochelle's "Taste of" series.

Some residents said they believe concerns over immigration enforcement may be the reason why.

"You know, [there are] a lot of things going on, and a lot of people are scared to go out," Maria said.

City officials wouldn't confirm whether those fears played a role in the decision, but the city manager issued a statement saying the choice was "made to ensure our public events remain safe, welcoming, and successful for all."

The decision disappointed business owners along Union Avenue, like Luis, the owner of Carnitas Los Huesos, who said the event brought in a big crowd and lots of cash.

"We got many people from all around, so it's good to know that people know our business [is] here," Luis said.

Still, Luis said he understands why the city made the call.

"Normally, we think of our customers first," Luis said. "They don't know what's going on with this administration, so [it's] better to leave it alone for now."

City officials said they're working on new ways to celebrate the area's diverse culture and said they plan to share soon.
