Rainy weather didn't stop hundreds of people from lacing up their sneakers and walking to raise awareness for the mentally ill on Saturday.
The Westchester affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness held a 5K at Rye Town Park. News 12's Lisa Salvadorini emceed the NAMI event. Organizers hoped to raise more than $100,000 to expand programs for the mentally ill.
Some NAMI programs include "Ending the Silence," in which presenters discuss the signs of mental illness with middle and high school students so that they can identify those signs in themselves or their friends.
NAMI says a new support group meets every Thursday night in New Hempstead for people suffering with depression or bipolar disorder.
