An environmental group is taking legal action against municipalities in Westchester that are allegedly violating the Clean Water Act.
According to Save the Sound, there are 11 municipalities in Westchester which are in violation of the act by illegally discharging sewage into rivers and the Long Island Sound.
The federal government enacted the Clean Water Act 43 years ago to protect the nation's waterways and regulate pollutants. However, the water in areas like Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck has been classified by the EPA as impaired due to pollution. Environmentalists are calling on local officials to find a solution.
"Save the Sound has been sampling water for three years now and we found very high bacteria counts, sometimes 10 times what's acceptable for recreation like swimming," says Tracy Brown, of Save the Sound.
Her organization has filed a suit in federal court against the municipalities, alleging that the pollution could potentially be making people and marine life ill.
"Put into place long-term funding that will allow us to maintain underground infrastructure we don't see, so we don't have sewage getting out before it gets to treatment plants," says Brown.
News 12 reached out to the municipalities for comment and heard back from several officials who were aware of the problem, but could not comment due to ongoing litigation.
