An online petition created by the Town of Greenburgh Supervisor's Office is calling for speed cameras on the Sprain Brook Parkway – and calling on state officials to act.

News 12 spoke with multiple drivers that say speeding along the roadway is a reoccurring problem.

"I frequently experience a number of drivers going very fast and even more concerning, darting in and out of lanes," said Nick Fiebach.

"When the highways are empty, people just want to take off. But when there are cars, people still want to take off and then they start cutting everybody off," said Miguel Mateo.

The New York State Police patrol approximately six miles of the Sprain Brook Parkway in the Town of Greenburgh. Troopers have issued more than 800 speeding citations along that same corridor so far this year.

Reasons like this are why Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner decided to create the petition to get the state to authorize the use of cameras.

"The best way of controlling speeding is by having speed cameras and letting motorists know that if they speed, they'll get a ticket," said Feiner.

Feiner says the cameras would allow for 24/7 enforcement. Drivers News 12 spoke with have mixed feelings about the cameras.

"That won't help…That's just a way to make money," said Mateo.

News 12 reached out to the state Department of Transportation who say the use of speed enforcement cameras can only be authorized via an act of the state Legislature. News 12 reached out to state officials but did not hear back.
