A Greenburgh police officer is suffering from a rare disease, and his wife is desperately seeking a kidney donor to save his life.
Officer Jeff Cerone, who has been with the Greenburgh Police Department for nine years, needs a kidney from a living donor to combat an extremely rare disease.
Cerone's kidney is only operating at about 14 percent. If his condition worsens before a donor can be found, he will have to go on dialysis and end his career on the force.
Along with reaching out to their police family, the Cerones set up a GoFundMe page to gather donations for costs that insurance may not cover.
Cerone learned that something was wrong with his kidney two years ago, but it wasn't until this past April that he was told he needed a transplant. He says that so far, he has been overwhelmed by the generosity of many people -- including strangers willing to give up their kidneys.
"I've gotten emails from as far away as Europe," he says. "I'm actually amazed at how people are that giving."
Despite the support, Cerone has yet to find a match.
