Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday plans for a pathway to universal child care across the state.
As part of Gov. Hochul's 2026 State of the State, this proposal would make pre-K universal statewide and expand child care subsidies to tens of thousand of additional families.
This comes after the Trump administration said it would be freezing child care funding for New York, California, Colorado, Illinois and Minnesota over allegations of fraudulent child care programming.
"I think we're always encouraged really by any effort to expand child care access for young children," said Angel Gray, a program and policy manager for Westchester Children's Association, "We really want to see what the full plan is behind this and making sure that there's a strong amount of accessibility for this program."
Gray says there's currently a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of child care.
