The next phase in construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge begins as crews start the installation of pile caps. The caps will cover the foundation piles installed in the river, which will support the new span.

Pile driving will also resume near the Rockland landing in the Hudson River, as well as on land. The pilings are being used to build the Rockland end of the new span, but the work had been suspended last month due to noise levels. 

Officials from Tappan Zee Constructors, the group building the new bridge, say new noise-reducing measures are now in place that will lower noise to allowable levels.

Construction on the new bridge's Westchester landing is beginning this week. Crews will begin drilling holes into the bedrock for the foundation of the new pier. This part of the project is expected to take about eight weeks.

As Labor Day weekend approaches, state officials are reminding boaters that the Coast Guard has established a 'Safety Zone' surrounding the 16 construction barges at the site, and no unauthorized vessels are allowed in the area.
