A former state trooper who admitted to lying about being shot in the line of duty has been sentenced to six months in jail and five years’ probation.
Thomas Mascia pleaded guilty to several charges, including filing a false report.
Mascia claimed he was shot on the Southern State Parkway by a dark-skinned man a year ago.
Investigators determined he shot himself.
“He wanted sympathy, he wanted attention, and he didn’t care what it cost to get it," Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly said.
Donnelly said Mascia’s phone history was like staring right into his plan.
She said there was a search for websites to buy guns online and an article on how it felt to be shot.
The DA described this case as “one of the most disgraceful breaches of public trust” she’s seen.
Mascia was supposed to be sentenced in May, but it was delayed over questions about his mental health. His sentence included mental health treatment, probation and paying nearly $300,000 in restitution.
Mascia did not speak at his sentencing at the advice of his attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman, who told reporters his client is mortified and regrets his behavior.
“It’s like nobody really wants to discuss the elephant in the room, which is why did this occur?" Lichtman said. "It doesn’t just occur out of the blue. It occurs because it was the result of many years of mental health issues that were never treated, including some that reared their head on the job."
