An early morning fire heavily damaged a building in Piermont.

Fire officials say flames broke out around 4:30 a.m. at 562 Piermont Ave. - a three-story building.

In addition to Piermont firefighters, around 45 firefighters from surrounding communities provided mutual aid. It took crews about 30 minutes to get the fire under control. Nio injuries have been reported.

The building, which once housed a VFW on the first floor with apartments on the second and third, had been sold recently and was undergoing construction inside.

Piermont Fire Chief Larry Cabrera says the fire appears to have started on the first floor and spread to the second and third floors.

The bitter cold temperatures also made it a challenge for crews. The area is especially cold due to its proximity to the Hudson River.  Luckily no one suffered injuries.

"The biggest problem for us is the icing from using the hose lines and that becomes unsafe for guys just trying to walk back to the truck," says Chief Cabrera.

The cause of the fire has not been released, but Chief Cabrera says it does not appear to be suspicious.
