A fast-moving fire destroyed part of a family-owned nursery that has been in Greenburgh since 1944.
Investigators are trying to determine what caused the Sunday night fire, which gutted the main building of the Sprainbrook Nursery, located at 448 Underhill Road.
About 50 firefighters spent roughly two hours getting the three-alarm blaze under control. At least seven neighboring departments provided mutual aid.
Fire officials say they did have problems with water pressure, but there was already heavy fire throughout the building when they arrived. Despite that, crews were able to keep the flames from spreading to the other buildings.
Investigators say gardening chemicals and flammable liquids inside the barn-type wood-frame building kept the fire smoldering throughout the night.
Daisy, Westchester County's arson dog, was brought in to help investigators as they combed over the wreckage. The cause of the fire does not appear to be suspicious, according to officials.
This past December, another fire destroyed a large equipment shed in the rear of the Sprainbrook property. The nursery owners tell News 12 that both fires occurred on a Sunday night while they were away. They're also upset because they say town officials knew of the water pressure issues in the area after the last fire, but the problems were never addressed.
